Freedom of expression is significantly oppressed during the pandemic

The governments abuse the situation related to COVID-19 and adopt new laws against those who are critical about the reaction of officials to the pandemic. In addition, the governments keep trying to limit society’s control over them as well as avoid accountability.

iDemocracy informs so with the reference to Amnesty International report «Silenced and Misinformed: Freedom of Expression in Danger During COVID-19».

«The onslaught of misinformation – whether that be through social media companies or people in a position of power seeking to spread division and confusion for their own gain – is posing a serious threat to the rights to freedom of expression and to health»,
– the report reads.

According to the above mentioned, Amnesty International recommends the governments to stop using the pandemic as an excuse to silence independent reporting, debate and scrutiny.
