Ukraine has positive tendency on women’s participation in peace- and security building

Ukraine is one of 10 countries where there are positive changes in the Women, Peace and Security Index. The Index evaluates the level of women’s involvement in the process of decision-making, peacebuilding and post-conflict rehabilitation.

iDemocracy informs so with the reference to the report by Georgetown University and the Peace Research Institute in Oslo «Women, Peace and Security Index 2021/22».

«Countries are more peaceful and prosperous when women are accorded full and equal rights and opportunities»,
– the reports says.

Compared to the previous report of 2019/20, Ukraine has significantly improved its positions from the 105th place to the 66th this year.

However the COVID pandemic has slowed down the pace of improving changes in women’s position across the globe. It has led to the increase in inequalities as countries at the top continue to improve while those ones at the bottom of the Index get worse.

iDemocracy expert Reshmedilova Olexandra has previously described how the Covid-19 pandemic led to a large-scale restriction of democratic rights and freedoms in Ukraine and in the world.
