Mykola Kuleba: There should be an efficient system of preventing negative effects among teenagers

Suicide is a big problem that may take place at any age due to a number of internal and external factors if someone does not lend a helping hand to a person in time.

For instance, according to the World Health Organization, one person dies in every 40 seconds due to a suicide. According to the State Statistics Service of Ukraine, 6103 persons died from the suicide in Ukraine in 2020. As of July 2021, 2988 people committed suicide.

Teenagers also face this problem. The number of suicides among children in Ukraine has increased this year. Teens committed more suicides in less than half a year in 2021 than during the whole 2020. As of the 1st of June 2021, there were 149 suicides whereas there were 123 suicide cases in 2020. .

Ukrainian society was shocked by the news that two girls from the city of Boyarka in Kyiv region poisoned themselves in February this year. One of them died due to this self-poisoning. Then one of the discussed reasons was the influence of social media.

«In my opinion, the Internet is not the only reason of suicide attempts. Social networks may become a kind of a trigger for a teen in crisis. Then destructive groups in social networks may incite a teenager to make this step. But it is a fact that children started to spend more time online during the pandemic. Adults’ task is to be more attentive to their children, be interested in their hobbies, speak about the risks that a child may face online and where he/she may turn for help »,

The doctors from the the National Children's Specialized Hospital "Okhmatdyt" constantly work with children who have become victims of domestic violence, got injured due to addictions and suicide attempts.
